Eriksson keeps door open for James

Sven-Goran Eriksson insists he has not slammed the door on David James’ World Cup hopes.

The Manchester City goalkeeper has not been called for international duty since being axed by Eriksson in the wake of August’s shambolic 4-1 friendly defeat to Denmark.

In the aftermath of the Copenhagen calamity, James admitted he had not prepared properly for his introduction as a second-half substitute, a statement he stands by even though it contributed to his omission from last month’s World Cup double-header against Wales and Northern Ireland.

James will be on the sidelines again as Eriksson’s team look to secure their position at next year’s finals in Germany and it appears only injury to firs-choice Paul Robinson, or back-up stoppers Chris Kirkland and Robert Green could offer the 35-year-old an opportunity to add to his 33 caps.

However, Eriksson insists James’ international career has not been consigned to the dustbin just yet and has offered the ‘keeper a possibility of a return providing he continues to excel with City.

“The door is still open,” Eriksson told the Manchester Evening News.

“I have told David that personally and I have always said it publicly.

“The base for selection is always to play well for your club. That is what I will pick squads based upon and I hope he goes on and plays well for City.”
