Becoming only the fifth side to haul back a four-goal deficit in European soccer history was always going to be beyond Everton.

They went out of the UEFA Cup, just a few weeks after failing to qualify for the Champions League group stages, after a night of tireless if predictable effort.

Everton hurled the ball into the Dinamo box from first whistle to last but had only a Tim Cahill header to show for their troubles, but at least they managed only their second victory of a desperately disappointing season.

The game ended on a dreadful note with Mikel Arteta carried off on a stretcher after being smashed in the back by Mihaita Plesan with a ferocious aerial challenge.

Worried colleagues gathered around their stricken colleague before he was able to be moved.
