City await Onuoha news

Manchester City are awaiting official confirmation Nedum Onuoha’s red card in last night’s Carling Cup defeat to Doncaster will be rescinded.

Onuoha was sent off by referee Graham Salisbury following a penalty area collision with Andy Warrington which left the Rovers keeper with a suspected broken leg.

TV replays have shown there was no intent behind the young defender’s challenge and a representative of the match officials entered the City dressing room within half an hour of the final whistle to inform Onuoha the decision would be revoked.

Blues boss Stuart Pearce is yet to hear from Salisbury but confirmed he would lodge an appeal if the punishment, which would bring an automatic three game ban, is not withdrawn.

“After watching the replays, it is an embarrassing decision,” said Pearce, whose side were leading when Onouha was dismissed but eventually went down 3-0 in a penalty shoot-out.

“Nedum is not a malicious player and if you look at it, he has actually done the keeper a favour by keeping his studs down so it ended up being a clash of knees.

“The referee has to make instant decisions in the heat of battle as we all do and he has made this one in good faith.

“We don’t agree with it but we will live with it, although we will appeal if it is not taken back.

“We would prefer not to go down that line though, we want the referee to ring us and apologise.”
