Mourinho wants to create aura of invincibility

Jose Mourinho wants teams to be fearful of facing Chelsea at fortress Stamford Bridge.

The Blues were unbeaten at home in all competitions last season en route to winning the Barclays Premiership and Carling Cup and reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League.

The Portuguese boss, who enjoyed two seasons of similarly flawless home form at Porto before coming to England, is determined home defeats will be few and far between.

He sees the creation of an aura of invincibility at home as being vital to the club’s pursuit of more silverware.

“Not to lose many points is very, very, very important,” Mourinho said.

“This is crucial, to have the feeling that at home we are powerful, for people to come here and to feel Chelsea normally get a result at home.

“(We want) opponents to come and to know by themselves normally Chelsea don’t lose a game at home.

“It is very important. I don’t say not to lose games, because losing games is normal, it happens. You cannot be two, three, four years without losing a game at home, one day you have to lose.

“The day we break this situation and somebody beats us, we have to think of another period of a few months without defeat.”

The Blues’ excellent home record was the key to all last season’s success according to Mourinho.

“That is why we won the Premiership, that is why we got to the semi-finals of the Champions League and that is why we reached the Carling Cup final,” he told Chelsea TV.

“Maybe if we had played Newcastle at Stamford Bridge instead of St James’, we would also have gone to the FA Cup final.”

Mourinho accepts continued home success will mean most teams arrive in west London determined not to lose, rather than go for victory.

Arsenal, Birmingham, Bolton, Manchester City and Tottenham all took a point at Stamford Bridge last season, with the latter famously accused by Mourinho of having “parked the team bus” in front of their goal.

“That’s normal. You let someone score a goal, they defend some more and you lose the game, that’s normally the history of a big team losing a game at home,” he said.

“They defend, defend, defend, like for example Birmingham did last year. You attack, attack, attack, they go (forward) once and score a goal and after that you are under pressure and I can see one of these games (happening again).

“Zero-zero is very possible because teams come here to defend, they have good organisation and succeed, but the biggest percentage of home matches will be Chelsea, three points.”

Mourinho is also more “comfortable” now that away fans are located in the Shed End, rather than directly behind the dug-outs.

“It is fair for our fans and it is more comfortable for us because we don’t have fans behind us all the time,” he said.

“I have it when I go away from home and that is normal, but in my house, to give the best seats to the opponent and for them to try to disturb me, I think is worse.

“Sometimes the people are polite but sometimes they are shouting at my back, it’s not comfortable. So if at home we can create the best conditions, I think for us that is intelligent.”
