Gillespie can face England and Wales
Keith Gillespie will be free to play for Northern Ireland against Azerbaijan, England and Wales after FIFA confirmed his three-match ban will only apply to friendly internationals.
The world governing body said that, as last night’s match against Malta was an out-of-competition match, the suspension would carry over to Northern Ireland’s future friendlies.
That is in line with article 39, paragraph 2.8 of FIFA’s disciplinary code and represents welcome news for manager Lawrie Sanchez.
The Sheffield United winger is a key member of the Northern Ireland team and they could ill-afford to do without him against England, Wales and firstly Azerbaijan in World Cup qualifiers.
Gillespie, dismissed by referee Mike Riley, was caught on camera slapping Andrew Cohen and kicking the ball away in the 77th minute.
Cohen’s team-mate Ivan Woods then got involved and was also dismissed after raising his hands, prompting a free-for-all.
Sanchez refused to defend Gillespie for his actions after last night’s 1-1 draw.
“If he slapped the player then he is as responsible as the other lad,” said Sanchez.
“It is disappointing he got involved. He was one of our better players.
“To be fair to Keith, he plays with a lot of heart and commitment when he puts the shirt on.
“We haven’t always seen eye to eye but he is a full-blooded player.”
The North have not won now in 10 matches stretching back to June 2004 and next up are Azerbaijan on September 3, followed by England four days later.
