Wright ruled out for three months

Sunderland defender Stephen Wright has been ruled out for three months after sustaining knee ligament damage.

Sunderland defender Stephen Wright has been ruled out for three months after sustaining knee ligament damage.

The right-back suffered his setback in training on Monday, and the injury is not related to the challenge on Wright which earned Charlton’s Darren Ambrose a red card on Saturday at the Stadium of Light.

Wright, 25, joined Sunderland for £3m (€4.4m) from Liverpool three years ago and will now miss the Black Cats’ trip to Anfield on Saturday.

The results of the scan on Wright’s knee means he must undergo surgery.

With boss Mick McCarthy’s defensive options reduced, Sunderland’s summer signing from Gillingham Nyron Nosworthy could be in line to start against Liverpool.
