Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy has rewarded winger Andy Welsh with a one-year extension to his Stadium of Light contract.

Welsh played eight times during the Black Cats’ march to the Barclays Premiership last season after joining the club for £15,000 (€22,000) from Stockport.

McCarthy told Sunderland’s official website, www.safc.co.uk: “Welshy deserves his contract extension – his attitude has been magnificent and he has worked harder than anyone to improve physically and technically.”
