Gunners to recruit third goalkeeper

Arsenal are poised to add a third goalkeeper to their first-team squad before Sunday’s Community Shield clash with Chelsea in Cardiff.

Jens Lehmann and Manuel Almunia are currently fighting it out to figure between the sticks for the Gunners, with the former leading the race, according to Arsene Wenger.

However, the Highbury boss is keen to bring in another candidate to keep that pair on their toes during the forthcoming campaign.

“Certainly I will bring in another goalkeeper,” Wenger told the club’s website, www.arsenal.com.

“You don’t take a goalkeeper to sit on the bench, you take them to challenge everybody. That is what we intend to do. It is fair competition.

“At the moment Lehmann is number one in my opinion, but we live in a competitive world and everybody accepts that you are only as good as your last game. You always have to prove yourself again.”
