Bolton have dismissed suggestions that Jay-Jay Okocha could quit the club and accept a lucrative move to Qatar.
Reports, which Wanderers have described as “emanating from Europe”, have linked the Bolton captain with a move to Al-Rayyan, who are managed by Luis Fernandez, Okocha’s boss at Paris St Germain.
The Frenchman is said to be preparing a package to tempted the 31-year-old Nigeria international away from the Reebok Stadium.
Rich Qatari clubs have successfully lured a series of big names from European football in recent seasons with the likes of Marcel Desailly, Gabriel Batistuta and Claudio Caniggia all making the switch.
But, speaking from the team’s hotel in Thailand where they are preparing for the Premier League Asia Trophy, Wanderers’ chairman Phil Gartside dismissed the story.
He said: “It is nonsense that Jay-Jay wants to leave Bolton. He is under contract and is more than happy with life at the Reebok. He doesn’t want to play for any other team but Bolton Wanderers.”
Meanwhile, Okocha is confident Bolton can win the Asia Trophy, a competition where a win over Manchester City tomorrow will see them take on the winners of the meeting between Everton and the Thai national team.
“The players are training hard and are ready for the game against Manchester City,” said the midfielder.
“It is only natural to think we can win this competition. It would certainly give us a great confidence boost for the rest of the season. This season is going to be massive and I look forward to being part of it.”
