Rico keen to finalise George’s contract
Cork City boss Damien Richardson is hoping to finalise a new three-year deal today to keep George O’Callaghan at Cork City.
O’Callaghan is out of contract at the end of the season and is one of four City players in contract negotiations with the club.
The others are Liam Kearney, Alan Bennett and John O’Flynn and with the July transfer window coming into play tomorrow, Richardson is anxious to tie down the new deals.
“We have made a wonderful offer to George. I want him to stay, I feel he wants to stay but interest from other clubs is making it a difficult time for him,” he said.
“I am confident that we can reach an agreement. We have made him a fine offer but it pales compared to the huge money he has been offered elsewhere.
“I honestly believe the other offers are unrealistic and with that type of money being bandied about you just wonder where is the league going,” said Richardson.
Drogheda are believed to have stepped up their interest in O’Callaghan and have come in with a €20,000 offer and the promise of a €30,000 signing on fee.
“I won’t be rushed into anything and I want some time to sit down and think about my future.
“Drogheda are the only club to come in with a concrete offer but I have had one or two enquiries from Nationwide League clubs as well,” said O’Callaghan, who insists it is not about money.
“I am 25 now and I would like another crack at cross-channel football.”
