Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was among a group of footballers questioned after alleged stag party high jinks at a hotel, police confirmed today.

A police investigation was launched into an allegation that a fellow guest was sprayed in the face with a fire extinguisher during the early-morning disturbance.

The Sun reported Ferdinand and Stoke defender Michael Duberry had been at a stag party thrown by Millwall midfielder Jody Morris, who married Louise Winstanley yesterday afternoon.

Police sources confirmed all three footballers were among those spoken to but no one was arrested and it was unclear which, if any, of the footballers were involved in the alleged assault.

A Hertfordshire Police spokeswoman said: “We were called to the Grove Hotel in Watford at 2.52am yesterday to a report of a disturbance between a small number of residents. Two police officers attended and spoke to the people involved.

“A complaint of common assault has been alleged and reported as a result and police are currently investigating that. The allegation is the victim was sprayed in the face with a fire extinguisher.”

She added: “I can confirm that no arrests were made.”

The alleged incident came just hours after reports Ferdinand was involved in a fracas in a Swedish nightclub.
