A mystery Liverpool player pictured celebrating on the pitch following the team’s European Cup win was a fan in a “borrowed” official tracksuit, it emerged today.

Lee Dames, aged 19, sneaked on to the pitch at the Ataturk stadium, in Istanbul, and posed with the players after they collected the Champions League trophy.

The teenager appeared to be part of the Liverpool entourage as he was wearing an official club tracksuit. In fact he had quickly donned the outfit after spotting it in the dugout.

Mr Dames, a semi-professional footballer with Unibond Northern Premier League team Burscough FC, said his “team-mates” played along with the joke.

He told the Liverpool Echo: “I just had to be with the team. I grabbed a tracksuit top from a steward then a jacket from the dugout. It was unbelievably brilliant.

“Some of the players were nudging each other about me and thought it was funny. It was tremendous enough to win the cup, but to get involved like that was the icing on the cake.”

Mr Dames has ordered his family to keep every newspaper with his picture in it for him to see when he returns from Turkey next week.
