Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore has defended a stinging report which criticises the role of the English Football Association.

A submission to the independent inquiry headed by Lord Terence Burns, who is currently conducting a review of the FA, by the Premier League sets out the issues they and their 20 member clubs feel need to be addressed in the future.

At the forefront of the report is the way the national team and the FA Cup are run, with the report stating: “The current way of working is unsustainable. Trust is lacking in the game at every level.”

Scudamore believed it was important for the Premier League to state their case for change as forcefully as possible.

“I don’t think it serves any purpose holding back the need for this,” he told BBC Radio Five Live.

“Most constituent parts of the game recognise and feel some of the tension.

“Anyone who does not think there is any need for change is not closely associated with the challenges we face on a daily basis.”
