Wayne Rooney’s stunning second-half volley sparked an inspired Manchester United comeback as they recorded their second win in a week over injury-ravaged Newcastle.

The Magpies looked set to avenge their FA Cup semi-final defeat in Cardiff when Darren Ambrose’s excellent finish gave them a half-time lead.

But, after Gabriel Heinze had been stretchered off with a serious-looking ankle injury, Rooney levelled with a stunning 25-yard effort before Wes Brown nodded home only the second goal of his United career to end the hosts’ two-match Barclays Premiership losing streak.
