Ireland slide to 15th in world rankings

The Republic of Ireland have fallen three places to 15th in the FIFA world rankings after failing to beat Israel in their World Cup qualifiers Group Four clash last month.

England have moved two places up the FIFA world rankings to sixth following last month’s World Cup qualifying victories.

Brazil continue to top the list with the Czech Republic replacing France in second to become Europe’s highest-ranking team.

John Toshack’s first matches since taking over as Wales boss saw his country drop two places to 73rd after two defeats by Austria and they have now been overtaken by Zambia.

However, there was better news for new Scotland manager Walter Smith as his side jumped two places following their gallant display in the 2-0 defeat by Italy.

Scotland’s progression came as a result of Syria’s defeat by Japan in a friendly in February and Burkina Faso’s loss to South Korea in March.

The crushing 4-0 defeat by England meant Northern Ireland fell even further from the top 100, slipping two spots to 113th.
