Ince looks to extend Wolves career
Paul Ince is ready to extend his career by another season after inviting Wolves to offer him a new contract.
In each of the last two summers, the 37-year-old former England midfielder has postponed plans to retire from the game and has now claimed he is waiting to be offered a new deal from Wanderers chief executive Jez Moxey.
“It’s down to Jez now really,” said Ince. “The ball is in his court, although I can’t wait forever for the phone to ring.
“We’re only a few games from the end of the season and I feel fine. I’m not too tired and there’s another year in me.
“I do hope that it’ll all be sorted here as soon as possible and then we can look forward.”
Ince has played a key role in helping Wolves stage a 13-match unbeaten run in the Coca-Cola Championship, although the fact they have drawn eight of those games means they have failed to make a late bid to reach the play-offs under manager Glenn Hoddle.
Even so, Ince hopes Hoddle will stay at the club when his six-month contract expires at the end of the campaign.
“Glenn has done a good job, his technical awareness of the game is A1 and I have enjoyed playing with him. Fingers crossed, this will all be resolved soon.”
The 2-0 win over promotion contenders Ipswich last night moved Wolves into the top half of the table for the first time this season.
But Ince believes it is vital Wolves do not let the season just “fade away”. “It’s too late, there’s only four games left and it would take an unlikely set of circumstances for us to get there.
“But it is also important that we don’t let this season just fade away. We all have to show our pride and still come out for a win every week, even though we’ve not achieved our aim of making the play-offs.”
Goals from Colin Cameron and Carl Cort capped an impressive performance from Wanderers and Ince added: “We were outstanding in the first 45 minutes.
“If we had played like that over the last 10 games or so then we would have had every chance of being right up there now. In the first half it could have been five or six to us, had it not been for their keeper.”
Wolves expect a bumper crowd at Molineux for the second leg of the FA Youth Cup semi-final against Southampton tomorrow night. They trail 1-0 from the first leg.
