Liverpool’s hopes of reaching the Champions League semi-finals have been dealt a huge blow after captain Steven Gerrard was ruled out of the second leg against Juventus.

The England midfielder suffered a groin strain in the 1-0 defeat to Manchester City at the weekend and was today ruled out of the trip to Turin by medical staff at the club’s Melwood training complex.

Gerrard will not travel with the club, who will look to defend a 2-1 lead on Wednesday in the Stadio Delle Alpi, but will remain at Melwood for further treatment as Liverpool look to get the 24-year-old fit for the Barclays Premiership visit of Tottenham on Saturday.
