AC earn local bragging rights
AC Milan 2 Inter Milan 0
AC Milan have one foot in the semi-finals of the Champions League as goals by Jaap Stam and Andriy Shevchenko earned the Rossoneri victory over city rivals Internazionale in a tense match at the San Siro.
The scoreline was harsh on Inter, who dominated the first half and more than matched the six-times European champions in the second period.
What separated the two teams was the dead-ball delivery of Milan playmaker Andrea Pirlo, the source of both the ‘home’ side’s goals.
His first deadly cross was glanced in by former Manchester United defender Stam just before the half-time interval.
His second was nodded home by prolific Ukraine marksman Shevchenko with 16 minutes left.
Just as important was the clean sheet kept by Milan, which will further dash Inter’s hopes of making the last four of Europe’s elite competition.
