Waterford's Banville to switch to football

Waterford United striker PJ Banville has opted to put his soccer career on hold in favour of lining out for the Wexford gaelic football team this year.

Wexford are in the hunt for a place in the National Football League semi-finals this year and Banville, 19, is hoping to catch the eye of manager Pat Roe after attending his first senior team training session recently having progressed through the Under 21 ranks.

A regular in Waterford United’s squad last season, the Blues’ were keen on hanging on to Banville though with Daryl Murphy, Willie Bruton, Vinny Sullivan and Willie Doyle all at the club, he would have found his chances limited this season.

Cobh Ramblers and Kilkenny City were also monitoring his progress but Banville has instead opted for GAA. “I’ve decided to take a break from soccer to concentre on gaelic football,” said Banville. “There is no certainty of making the team but I’m prepared to give it my best shot.”
