Gareth Southgate has admitted that injury-hit Middlesbrough are paying the price for not increasing the depth of their squad last summer and during the January transfer window.

But the Boro skipper has still urged the remaining fit players “to have a serious think” about what they want to achieve in the final quarter of the season after an inept performance at Aston Villa.
