Brentford could land dream United tie
Manchester United will face a trip to Southampton or Brentford in the quarter-finals.
League One Brentford fought back to claim a 2-2 draw with Saints on Saturday and will now be rewarded with a clash against Sir Alex Ferguson’s side if they can win their replay.
Newcastle’s reward for ending Chelsea’s quadruple bid was a last-eight clash with the winners of the replay between Tottenham and Nottingham Forest.
Arsenal will have to travel to Bolton if they can overcome Sheffield United in their replay whilst Burnley or Blackburn will host Leicester.
United were beaten by Southampton in the 1976 final when Bobby Stokes claimed the winner and also in a penalty shoot-out in a fourth round replay in 1992.
Harry Redknapp’s Saints side however still have some work to do to before making plans for United again after being pushed so hard by Brentford. Southampton travel to Griffin Park for the replay a week tomorrow.
Bolton, then in the old First Division, famously beat Arsenal in a fourth round replay at Highbury 11 years ago.
Victory in their quarter-final against the Gunners or Sheffield United would take them through to their first semi-final since losing on penalties to Aston Villa in 2000.
Newcastle, who have not won a major trophy since 1969, featured in two finals in 1998 and 1999, but may have to face a Spurs side that have already beaten them once this season.
Lancashire rivals Burnley and Blackburn will face each other again on March 1 for the right to host Leicester.
