Savage switch set to go through

Robbie Savage is finally expected to complete his £3m (€4.3m) move to Blackburn tomorrow morning.

Robbie Savage is finally expected to complete his £3m (€4.3m) move to Blackburn tomorrow morning.

Birmingham are expecting the deal for the Welsh international to be finalised sooner rather than later.

Savage submitted a written transfer request to Birmingham a fortnight ago, and will now be reunited with his former Wales manager Mark Hughes and ex-Blues number two Mark Bowen at Ewood Park.

One of the last obstacles in the deal was removed when Savage paid back the majority of the image rights and golden handshake he was given when signing a new four-year contract with Birmingham at the start of this season.

Savage is understood to have received around £80,000 (€114,675) and has agreed to hand back around three-quarters of that figure to the midlands club.

Birmingham press officer Andy Maxey said: “We are resigned to the fact that we will be losing Robbie Savage to Blackburn, but the deal has not yet been quite finalised. However, it should go through on Wednesday morning.”

Savage has been involved in a bitter battle with Birmingham since it became clear he wanted to leave the club two and a half years after joining from Leicester City.

He was forced to play for the reserves and also left out of the Premiership game with Bolton, with Blues co-owner David Sullivan accusing him of “being greedy”.

But Savage is understood to have parted on amicable terms with Birmingham manager Steve Bruce after the pair had a meeting before the weekend.
