Vassell yearning for Villa return
Darius Vassell admits he is itching to return to action after a three month lay-off with a broken ankle.
The Aston Villa and England striker could play some part in tonight’s reserve-team outing with Manchester United at the Bescot Stadium.
But, even if he is not risked in that match, the 24-year-old is close to giving Villa manager David O’Leary a timely boost in the forward department.
O’Leary has arguably had the most fallow strike partnership in the Premiership at his disposal in Juan Pablo Angel and Carlton Cole in recent months.
Cole will be looking for his first goal since August 28 in Saturday’s home clash with Norwich while Angel has failed to hit the target in his last 11 games.
A fit and on-song Vassell will give O’Leary a much-needed additional option and he has only had rookie Luke Moore as back-up.
Vassell said: “The injury is coming along well. I’m looking forward to getting back and getting some games under my belt.
“It has been frustrating to be out of action for so long but there is still time to make a good contribution this season.”
In his absence Villa have hit the target only 12 times in 14 matches while Cole has netted twice and Angel five times this season.
Midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger is certain to make his return from a thigh injury in tonight’s game while central defender Martin Laursen is set to return to full training next week after a five-month battle to overcome a knee problem.
