The part-timers of Yeading took enormous credit but Newcastle grabbed the result and a place in the fourth round after a stirring FA Cup tie at Loftus Road.

Lee Bowyer and Shola Ameobi scored the second-half goals which spared Graeme Souness’s struggling Premiership side the embarrassment of a replay.

But Yeading did the Ryman League proud with a spirited performance which saw them go close to scoring through David Clarke and Emond Protain.
