Jaaskelainen left out for Bolton

Bolton’s highly-rated goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen was a surprise omission from the team on the day the transfer window opened.

The club refused to disclose whether the Finnish shot-stopper was injured, only that manager Sam Allardyce would explain later.

Jaaskelainen’s absence brought a first Barclays Premiership start this season for 41-year-old Kevin Poole with Andy Oakes on the bench.

Allardyce made two other changes to the side that lost to Blackburn – their sixth defeat in a row – with Kevin Nolan and Ivan Campo replacing Henrik Pedersen and Stelios Giannakopoulos.

West Brom’s only league victory this season came against Bolton and manager Bryan Robson welcomed back Kanu after a virus.

Bolton: Poole, Hunt, Jaidi, N’Gotty, Gardner, Okocha, Campo, Speed, Nolan, Davies, Diouf. Subs: Pedersen, Oakes, Hierro, Ben Haim, Vaz Te.

West Brom: Hoult, Scimeca, Purse, Clement, Robinson, Gera, Johnson, Wallwork, Greening, Kanu, Horsfield. Subs: Albrechtsen, Hulse, Kuszczak, Earnshaw, Koumas.

Referee: M Dean (Wirral)
