Rovers to play home games in Drogheda
Shamrock Rovers have named Drogheda United’s home ground, United Park as their home venue for next season.
With FAI club licensing applications needing to be submitted by today, Rovers needed a security of tenure agreement with a ground and a deal was struck with Drogheda today.
Talks had also taken place with St Patrick’s Athletic, Bohemians and Shelbourne.
United Park will be Rovers’ eighth home ground since leaving Glenmalure Park in 1987 having previously played at Tolka Park, Dalymount Park, the RDS, Morton Stadium, Richmond Park and one game each at Belfield Park and Turner’s Cross.
Drogheda United chairman Vincent Hoey said: “This will ensure that one of the domestic games greatest names and traditions survives.”
The shock news comes just one day after Shamrock Rovers learned that they have been refused an extension to their planning application for their own home ground in Tallaght.
