Ternent named Gills boss

Stan Ternent has been appointed the new manager of Coca-Cola Championship strugglers Gillingham.

Ternent takes over from Andy Hessenthaler, who stepped down as manager last week but is still on the playing staff at Priestfield.

58-year-old Ternent, who was sacked as boss of Burnley in June after six years in charge at Turf Moor, has now been handed the task of staving off relegation at Gillingham. The Gills are lying second from bottom in the table, four points from safety.

The former Blackpool, Hull and Bury manager beat off competition from Dave Bassett and Colin Lee to land the job.

Ternent has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal and brings Ronnie Jepson with him as his assistant.
