Eriksson urges anti-racism action
England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson believes the ugly scenes at the Bernabeu give football officials a “golden opportunity” to tackle racism.
The international friendly against Spain last week was marred by monkey chants aimed at black players.
Eriksson believes FIFA can now act on the problem to set clear guidelines on what players and officials can do.
The Swede admitted he did not think about taking his players off – but believes this form of protest could be used effectively to combat racism.
Eriksson said: “What happened when we played Spain last week was very bad.
“But in one way it was good that it happened because UEFA have a golden opportunity to do something strong. It’s a good example and I think something will happen.”
FIFA are investigating the events during the friendly, while UEFA could take action following similar chanting at the same ground for Real Madrid’s Champions League match with Bayer Leverkusen.
“I never considered that (taking players off) but if it is a possibility in the future, I would like that.
“There should be clear rules. If we are in a World Cup qualifier and winning 1-0 we need to know what is happening. But UEFA and FIFA can make clear rules.”
