The demolition of the Shed to be replaced by a new 1,500 all-seater stand at Cork City ground Turner’s Cross moved a step nearer today.

The FAI have formally released over €1m — the proceeds of the sale of Bishopstown — to three projects in Cork.

The influx of cash will be used in all local projects — the upgrading of Turner’s Cross, the setting up the Mayfield regional development centre at Mayfield and the purchase of more pitches for Ballincollig AFC.

“This cash comes from the €1.7m sale of Bishopstown two years ago and will be topped up to the tune of 80% by the government in the next issue of Sports Capital grants in April or May,” said Ger Delaney of the Munster FA.

“Work could start on the project next summer but whether it could go ahead or not during the playing season is another matter.

“I suppose that call is up to Cork City but it may cause too much disruption,” he went on to say.

The cost of the Shed development will be similar to the £2m plus that was spent on the Donie Forde stand.

New offices, dressingrooms and a VIP area will be incorpor ated in the Curragh Road-end project.

There are still a limited number of tickets, priced at €10, available for tonight’s end-of-season party, Player of the Year awards and medal presentation at the Rochestown Park hotel from 8.30pm onwards and they can be purchased on the door.
