The Football Association of Ireland has issued a statement confirming that its chief executive, Fran Rooney, is to leave his post on Friday after a year and a half in the job.

The 47-year-old Dubliner, a former chief executive of Baltimore Technologies, has been under fire within the association due to his style of management and his performance in the job.

Reports in the media said he had negotiated a six-figure settlement with the FAI in lieu of the 18 months left on his contract.

However, he had previously insisted that he would fight to retain the post.
