Hoddle still favourite for Baggies post

Glenn Hoddle remains favourite to become West Brom’s new boss but the appointment is not a done deal.

Glenn Hoddle remains favourite to become West Brom’s new boss but the appointment is not a done deal.

The former England chief is believed to want the job and woke up this morning to headlines suggesting it was in the bag.

But the club responded today by insisting they are still drawing up a shortlist of names to replace Gary Megson.

And there appears every chance that caretaker-boss Frank Burrows will remain in charge for Saturday’s trip to Hoddle’s former club Southampton.

Albion issued a statement which read: “The board is in the process of forming a shortlist of candidates for the vacant job of team manager and this will be finalised shortly.

“Following interviews with these candidates, an appointment will be made and there will be no comment from the club until that time.

“It is most important that the right individual with the right desire and motivation is appointed to continue the long-term building process at this football club.”

Hoddle is believed to be favoured by Albion chairman Jeremy Peace who wants Albion to shed the dour and stubborn image they gained under Megson.

Gerard Houllier and Gordon Strachan are also high up the Hawthorns wanted list for the same reason.

Former Baggies players Sir Bobby and Bryan Robson have expressed their interest while ex-Leicester boss Micky Adams is also in the running.
