Crewe cut down by three-star United

Alan Smith’s seventh goal of the campaign sent Manchester United on their way to a comfortable Carling Cup victory over Crewe at Gresty Road.

Smith slotted home a first-time shot from Louis Saha’s pass after just 10 minutes and though the Railwaymen stretched their illustrious visitors at times, they were never able to claw back the lead.

Irish international Liam Miller netted a second after impressive work from David Bellion before Stephen Foster rounded off the scoring two minutes later, unluckily turning the ball into his own net after Bellion had failed to control Saha’s cross.
