Megson to quit next summer
West Brom manager Gary Megson today confirmed he will leave the club next summer.
Megson has performed wonders in his four-and-a-half years at The Hawthorns, helping them up from 21st in the old First Division to twice gain promotion to the Premiership.
But his position has come under scrutiny with one top-flight win so far this season, and he was concerned by the lack of effort shown by his players in training in the build-up to Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.
Megson has experienced a stormy relationship with chairman Jeremy Peace, who has so far declined to offer a new contract to the 45-year-old whose current deal expires at the end of this season.
The Albion boss told the Wolverhampton Express & Star today: “I won’t sign a new contract.”
He added: “I don’t intend to talk any more about the decision I have made.
“I have a contract until June 30 and I intend to carry on doing my job until then.
“I will give all the effort and drive that I can to succeed on behalf of the football club.
“If training is not good enough, if the results don’t go the right way I will continue to be upset about it.”
It is believed the club will issue a statement later today when Peace emerges from a business meeting.
