Kezman hopes Mutu will return

Mateja Kezman hopes to one day see Adrian Mutu return to play for Chelsea.

The Romanian international, who failed a random drug test and has admitted taking cocaine, flies back into England from Rome today for more talks with his employers.

He also begins a series of daily counselling sessions tomorrow in a bid to avoid a possible two-year ban from the game at club and international level.

Serbia and Montenegro striker Kezman, who joined Chelsea from PSV Eindhoven during the summer, admits he has sympathy for his fellow front man. “Adrian’s a good guy and I hope he comes back to the club,” he said.

“I’ve not spoken to him for a few days, but will try to give him my support in this difficult moment in his life.”

“If you look at Mutu, there’s no doubting his quality and we need a player like him. He’s just made a mistake, has said he’s sorry and we’ll see what happens.”

Chelsea skipper John Terry, meanwhile, insists Jose Mourinho’s squad have not been distracted by the personal problems of their absent team-mate.

Terry declared: “All we’ve thought about this week is Chelsea Football Club and ourselves, and that’s what we need to do.”

Mutu has, though, been accused of getting carried away with his fame and fortune by the president of the Romanian Football Association.

RFA president Mircea Sandu said: “This is the problem with all these d***heads who earn lots of money and believe they can do anything.

“Losing Mutu to suspension is a serious problem for the national team – but life has to move on.”

The Romania skipper also came under fire from international strike partner Ioan Ganea.

The Wolves forward claims Mutu would have been better off turning to drink than using cocaine and maintains the 25-year-old has never taken life seriously.

Ganea said: “Mutu should drink a dozen bottles of wine a night instead of taking drugs. It’s a tragedy. He didn’t take life seriously until this moment.”

Romanian coach Anghel Iordanescu fears Mutu will be hit with a lengthy ban, thereby ruining his World Cup plans.

“The national team is in a difficult situation right now and my plans have been jeopardised. I thought Mutu was the leader of my team.

“I don’t believe it will be a short suspension because the international bodies are harsh on drugs.

"This is a big shock for Romanian football.”
