Vogts hit with touchline ban

FIFA today confirmed that Scotland manager Berti Vogts will have to watch Wednesday’s crucial World Cup qualifier against Moldova from the stands.

They have imposed an automatic one-match touchline ban on the German, who is under pressure to improve results after a stuttering start to Scotland’s campaign.

Vogts was banished to the stands for the second half of Saturday’s home match against Norway at Hampden Park, which the visitors won 1-0.

The former Germany coach approached referee Paul Allaerts at half-time, after feeling that his side had been denied a goal.

The Scotland boss objected to a decision made by Allaerts, to deny Richard Hughes a goal. Vogts felt that the Portsmouth midfielder’s shot had crossed the line, and he raised his protests with the referee at the interval.

FIFA spokesman Andreas Herren told the Press Association: “I understand that he has been ejected from the game against Norway and as a minimum he will be suspended from the game against Moldova on October 13 and that he will be referred to a FIFA disciplinary committee.”

Depending on the referee’s report, Vogts could see his touchline ban increased.

No date has been set yet for Vogts’ case to be heard.
