Barton signs new Man City deal

Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton has agreed a new contract which keeps him at the club for the next three years.

The 22-year-old had one year to run on his current deal with the Blues and celebrated the new arrangement with a goal in his side’s 7-1 Carling Cup win over Barnsley last night.

“There was speculation that I would move from this club but I have stated that I want to stay here and be part of a successful Manchester City and hopefully we can get that,” Barton told the club’s official website, www.mcfc.co.uk.

The Liverpudlian, a product of the City Academy, was more than happy to extend his association with the Eastlands club.

“My agent was in on Tuesday morning and as soon as he told me he had a deal I put pen to paper in the afternoon,” Barton revealed.

“The club were happy and I was certainly happy and wanted to get it done and dusted as soon as I could.

“There was no decision to make. I just wanted to stay here and play football. If I can stay in the team and enjoy it then I will stay here for the rest of my career.

“I have no reason to leave here. I love it here and don’t want to go anywhere else. The new deal will take me up to the age of 24 when we will assess the situation again.”
