A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “Roy Keane has this afternoon been charged with a section 4 public order criminal damage and a section 39 assault relating to an incident that occurred in the Hale area on September 4, 2004.

“He will appear before Trafford Magistrates on Thursday September 23, 2004.”

The 33-year-old is alleged to have clashed with a 16-year-old boy near his £1.4m home in the wealthy Manchester suburb of Hale, on Saturday, September 4.

Today the Irish international went to Stretford Police Station, a couple of miles from Old Trafford, with his solicitor and was charged with the offences.

He will now appear in court in Trafford on Thursday.

Keane played in last night’s victory over Liverpool in the Premier League at Old Trafford.
