Everton began life without Wayne Rooney at Manchester City this afternoon hoping to cement their position in the top half of the Premiership.

Rooney’s £27m (€39.6m) departure to Manchester United came too late for David Moyes to spend any of the fee on strengthening his squad, so the Toffees boss stuck with the side which earned a creditable draw at Old Trafford on their last league outing two weeks ago.
