Steven Gerrard was today facing a battle to prove his fitness for the start of England’s 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign.

The Liverpool captain had been earmarked as one of Eriksson’s key figures ahead of tomorrow’s opening qualifier in Austria, with Nicky Butt injured and Paul Scholes having retired from international football.
