Derry through to quarter-finals
Derry City 0 Shelbourne 0 (Derry won 5-3 on pens)
Alan Calwey missed a spot kick to put Derry City into the quarter-finals of the FAI Carlsberg Cup after 210 minutes of football failed to separate the sides in this epic third round tie.
Cawley cracked Shels’ fourth penalty off the crossbar and Ciaran Martyn stepped up to shoot home Derry crucial fifth spot kick to put them through and give boss Stephen Kenny a big win in his first match at the Brandywell.
Derry were the better side in the first half with Alan Murphy tormenting the Shels defence.
He twice put Michael Holt in on goal, the winger being booked for handling the first cross into the net before then firing just over the top for the second.
Shels ran much of the second half before Derry substitute Gary Beckett missed a sitter in stoppage time when heading wide as the game went into extra-time.
