Chelsea recover from early shock
Chelsea were on course to maintain their 100% start to the season despite a dreadful start against Southampton.
Steve Wigley’s second game in charge for the visitors started superbly with James Beattie scoring the opener after 12 seconds at Stamford Bridge.
Joe Cole played a poor back-pass from the kick-off and the 26-year-old striker finished from 20 yards.
Jose Mourinho’s side applied plenty of pressure on the visitors’ defence with Didier Drogba going close but it was a Beattie own goal which levelled the score.
Eidur Gudjohnsen’s effort was bundled in off the England striker and a Frank Lampard penalty made it 2-1 at the break.
There was early action at Goodison Park with Everton taking an early lead against West Brom but the visitors hit back straight away.
Youngster Leon Osman opened the scoring for David Moyes’ side with a far-post header after two minutes but Scott Dobie equalised minutes later when his header from Jonathan Greening’s corner deflected in off Lee Carsley and it was 1-1 at half-time.
Jermain Defoe continued his fine form for Tottenham and scored the opener against Birmingham at White Hart Lane.
Mikael Forssell had an effort blocked 10 minutes before the break but Defoe scored a goal out of nothing seconds later when he cut inside and finished past Maik Taylor to give Spurs a 1-0 lead at half-time.
Nicolas Anelka scored the opener for Manchester City against Charlton after 13 minutes – and his side were 2-0 up at the break. The France striker turned Mark Fish and finished powerfully past Dean Kiely at Eastlands.
Danny Murphy had a great chance to equalise from a corner but his shot cleared the crossbar.
Trevor Sinclair then scored a bizarre second just before the break after a mistake from Kiely and Luke Young.
Crystal Palace were enjoying plenty of possession at Middlesbrough but they could not create an early opening at the Riverside.
Both had chances to open the scoring but saves from Mark Schwarzer and Julian Speroni kept it 0-0 at the break.
