League boss pays tribute to Shels

Shelbourne’s Champions League run may be at an end but their European journey can go on, says eircom League chairman Declan Ó Luanaigh.

Ó Luanaigh paid tribute to Shels after their Champions League campaign was brought to a halt in Spain last night with a 3-0 defeat to Deportivo La Coruna.

Pat Fenlon’s side now turn their attention to the UEFA Cup as compensation and the league chief said: “Shelbourne have shown that the eircom League champions can successfully compete with Europe's top sides and will now continue to fly the flag for the league in the revamped UEFA Cup.

“Shelbourne's participation in this season's Champions League may have come to an end tonight but their performances home and away against KR Reykjavik, Hajduk Split and now Deportivo La Coruna are a credit to chief executive Ollie Byrne, chairman Finbar Flood, manager Pat Fenlon, the players and everyone connected with the club.

“I now wish Shelbourne well as they resume their domestic programme in the league and FAI Cup as well as hopefully many more great European nights over the coming season."
