Gazza hospital visit is 'precaution'
Paul Gascoigne’s visit to hospital today with suspected food poisoning was a purely precautionary measure, according to Boston manager Steve Evans.
Gascoigne, named as assistant boss of the Coca-Cola League Two side earlier this week, was to be guest of honour at the pre-season friendly between Newcastle and Rangers – two of his former clubs.
However, the 37-year-old was taken ill before kick-off and was admitted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
Evans insisted there was no great cause for alarm and told the Press Association: “Paul’s hospital visit is precautionary, and he will play in our friendly at Stevenage on Monday.
“He is in top-class condition and we are delighted to have him at Boston United.
“I have spoken to him and he is in fine fettle. As always with Gazza, these things are blown up a bit out of proportion.”
A spokesman for the hospital said tonight: “Mr Gascoigne is in our hospital, but the patient wishes no media coverage and we are respecting his wishes.”
The former England international was unveiled as assistant boss of Boston earlier this week and last played in England for Burnley two years ago.
