Alan Smith got the thumbs up from Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson despite missing a penalty in his opening game for the club.

The United boss said Smith and other young Red Devils Phil Bardsley, Bojan Djordic, Chris Eagles, Paul McShane, Jonathan Spector and Keiran Richard could only benefit from playing alonside talismanic Roy Keane.
