Wolves buy Nigerian midfielder

Wolves are poised to sign Nigeria midfielder Seyi George Olofinjana from Norwegian club Brann Bergen for £1.7m (€2.5m).

The 23-year-old, who saw a move to Monaco fall through last week, is expected to agree a four-year contract at Molineux subject to him being granted a work permit.

“I am very pleased that George is finally here after months of tracking him,” manager Dave Jones told www.wolves.co.uk.

“We thought we’d lost him at one stage but thankfully things have worked out and we’ve managed to get him back.

“George is a strong midfielder, a good passer of the ball and is equally happy attacking as he is defending. He is a good acquisition for Wolves and we look forward to seeing him in action for us.”

The fee for Olofinjana, who is simply known as ‘George’, could eventually rise to £2m because of add-ons.

Meanwhile, Wales full-back Rob Edwards’ proposed move to Molineux from Aston Villa has stalled.

Wolves have concerns over the 21-year-old’s fitness after a medical examination revealed potential problems connected to an ankle injury sustained last season.

Wolves plan to consult a specialist, with the transfer on hold until a detailed report on the player’s fitness is received by Jones.

“The medical’s shown up a slight problem the boy’s suffered with and it’s only right we get it properly checked out,” said Jones.

“We’ve sent him off to have a proper investigation with one of the country’s top specialists and then, hopefully, he’ll be given the all-clear so we can complete the signing.

“He can be a big signing for this club and we’re keen for all this to be sorted out and everything to get back on track.”
