Hasselbaink joins Boro
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has joined Middlesbrough on a two-year deal.
The 32-year-old former Chelsea striker will now team up with Mark Viduka, who completed his £4.5m (€6.7m) move from Leeds yesterday.
Hasselbaink is Boro’s third sigining this week, Michael Reiziger having joined on a free transfer from Barcelona on Tuesday.
Middlesbrough chief executive Keith Lamb confirmed: ``He's signed a two-year contract and there's no fee involved - so it's good business.''
Hasselbaink said: “I’m very excited and pleased to get this opportunity. I heard about it a few weeks ago and I was interested straight away – now I’m very happy and can’t wait to start.”
The Dutch international, previously a Premiership player with Chelsea and Leeds, believes bringing Champions League football to The Riverside is a possibility.
He continued at a press conference on Teesside, televised by Sky Sports News: “You definitely have to have some goals – and we want to be in Europe.
“I think with the players already here and those coming its definitely a possibility to aim for the Champions League – I think we can achieve it.”
Asked if he was pleased to be joining Mark Viduka, who replaced him at Elland Road when Hasselbaink left for Chelsea, the Dutchman added: “Mark is not the only great striker here. You’ve got (Joseph-Desire) Job, (Malcolm) Christie, (Massimo) Maccarone and myself – I’m just happy to get this chance and play for Middlesbrough.”
On Viduka, he said: “We have to achieve something together. I had a special connection with Eidur (Gudjohnsen) at Chelsea and hopefully I can have that with Mark too.”
He added: ``Chelsea are a special club for me and I have left them on good terms but, when I play for Boro, I hope we will beat them.
“With the squad we have here I think Middlesbrough are definitely going to upset a few people this season and these are exciting times for the club.”
