UEFA have cleared Switzerland forward Alexander Frei of any spitting offence during last Thursday’s Group B match against England.

The 24-year-old was charged yesterday after a review of video evidence of an incident involving England midfielder Steven Gerrard.

UEFA’s control and disciplinary body today decided the evidence was not conclusive at a hearing in Lisbon.

Statements had been taken from the players involved, along with England captain David Beckham.

The English Football Association submitted no complaint.

Italy forward Francesco Totti received a three-match ban after spitting at Denmark’s Christian Poulsen in the Azzurri’s opening game last Monday.
