Latvia striker Maris Verpakovskis missed the best chance of a busy first half against Germany in a Group D Euro 2004 match at Porto’s Estadio do Bessa.

Tournament outsiders Latvia started the half brightly but the Germans got into their stride as the game wore on and created several shooting chances.

Verpakovskis could have scored a spectacular goal after 39 minutes when his solo run took him clear of Christian Worns and Frank Baumann only for Oliver Kahn to make a fine save.
