Italy were forced to settle for a goalless draw against a brave Denmark side in the opening Group C game of Euro 2004 at Guimaraes.

The hardworking Danes proved lively opposition for the Italians but failed to punish the Azzurri in the opening half when they created several opportunities.

Gianluigi Buffon was on top form for the Italians, as was his Danish counterpart Thomas Sorensen who made a stunning reaction save to deny Francesco Totti in the first half.

No changes were made at half-time with both coaches satisfied with their initial line-ups.

Italy attempted to press forward more aggressively after the break and Gianluca Zambrotta should have given Italy the lead following a fantastic assist from Totti who found the unmarked defender inside the area but Zambrotta’s shot went inches wide of Sorensen’s left post.

In the 57th minute, Sorensen was forced to make a fine save after Vieri's powerful header on target following Zambrotta's cross from the right.

With 15 minutes remaining, Buffon proved why he is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world by producing two marvellous saves from close range shots by Tomasson and then Rommedahl.

With eight minutes remaining, Buffon was once again called into action to punch clear Daniel Jensen’s powerful long shot.

Italy had their last opportunity of the game after Henriksen fouled Totti on the edge of the area but his free-kick flew over Sorensen’s goal.
