Silvestre: I could have been sent off

France defender Mikael Silvestre has admitted his surprise at escaping a red card for the foul on Wayne Rooney which led to David Beckham’s costly Euro 2004 penalty miss.

England were leading 1-0 through Frank Lampard’s header when Rooney burst past Silvestre and was brought down inside the penalty area.
